The trek starts in Phulawasipata (4,626m), and you will hike 1.5 to 2 hours uphill on a gradual but high-altitude trail. Along the way, you will witness stunning views of the Vilcanota mountain range, observe free-roaming llamas and alpacas, and gaze upon the majestic, snow-capped Ausangate peak.
The physical effort culminates at over 5,000m (16,404 feet) at the viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain, where you will be instantly rewarded by the surreal, multicolored landscape created by the natural oxidation of mineral layers. Enjoy free time to capture unforgettable photos, soak in the panoramic views, and reflect on the area's Andean worldview. Departure from Cusco:
We begin very early, between 4:00 – 4:30 a.m., with pickup from your hotel in Cusco via tourist transport. We head south of Cusco, passing through rural and mountainous landscapes.
7:00 a.m. | Breakfast in Cusipata:
We stop in the town of Cusipata to enjoy a traditional Andean buffet breakfast at a local restaurant, including fresh-baked bread, eggs, fruit, herbal teas, and natural juices to recharge your energy.
8:00 a.m. | Continue to the Phulawasipata community:
After breakfast, we drive for about 1 hour to the starting point of the hike, located in Phulawasipata (4,626 meters / 15,177 feet).
9:00 a.m. | Begin hike to Rainbow Mountain:
We start the 7 km round-trip hike on a gradual trail with stunning views of the Vilcanota mountain range, llamas, alpacas, and snowcapped peaks like Ausangate.
Approximate hiking time: 1.5 to 2 hours uphill at a slow pace.

11:45 a.m. | Return hike to starting point:
We begin our descent along the same path, now seeing the landscape from a new perspective. Trekking poles are highly recommended.
1:30 p.m. | Buffet lunch in Cusipata:
After the hike, we reward ourselves with a buffet lunch featuring typical Peruvian dishes, including vegetarian options.
2:30 p.m. | Return to Cusco:
After lunch, we head back to Cusco city.
5:00 – 5:30 p.m. | Arrival in Cusco:

You will be spending the day at 3,800 meters, which is significantly higher than Cusco (3,400m) and Machu Picchu (2,400m). Simply walking across the village or helping with agricultural tasks might leave you breathless. It is best enjoyed after you have spent at least 2-3 days acclimatizing in the Sacred Valley or Cusco.
Is this tour a "show" put on for tourists?
No, this is a community-based tourism initiative. The families you visit are living their actual lives—farming potatoes, herding animals, and weaving for their own use or trade. Your visit provides a supplemental income that helps them maintain their traditional way of life without having to migrate to the cities. The activities you join, whether it's planting or harvesting, are dictated by the agricultural calendar, not a tourist script.
Can I combine this with a trip to Machu Picchu?
Logistically, yes, and it works quite well. The tour passes through Ollantaytambo, which is the main train hub for Machu Picchu. Since the tour concludes in the late afternoon (around 3:30 PM departure from the village, arriving back to the valley floor shortly after), you could potentially arrange to be dropped off at the Ollantaytambo train station to catch an evening train to Aguas Calientes, rather than returning all the way to Cusco.
