The ascent culminates at the breathtaking Laguna Singrenacocha, where you will witness the vibrant turquoise waters perfectly reflecting the towering Ausangate glacier and surrounding multicolored peaks. 4:30 a.m. | Hotel Pickup & Departure from Cusco
We’ll start the day early with hotel pickup in Cusco. Our private transport will head south toward the Ausangate region, passing rural landscapes and high Andean views. Along the way (approx. 3 hours), we’ll stop for a light breakfast in Tinke or the nearby Ocongate community.
8:30 a.m. | Arrival in Mallma & Hike to Singrenacocha
Upon arrival in the Mallma community, we’ll begin a scenic hike of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours (one way) to the turquoise Laguna Singrenacocha, set beneath the towering Ausangate glacier and multicolored mountain peaks.
While technically an easy trail, the high altitude requires a slow and steady pace. Along the way, you may spot alpacas, wetlands, and possibly vizcachas (Andean rodents).
At the lagoon, you’ll have free time to rest, explore, and capture stunning photos of the vibrant reflections that change with the sunlight.

We’ll enjoy a picnic-style lunch by the peaceful shores of Singrenacocha, surrounded by pristine mountain scenery.

How difficult is the hike compared to other day treks like Humantay?
While Humantay is famous for its steep, breathless ascent, Singrenacocha is technically gentler but located at a higher starting altitude. You begin your hike at the Mallma community and walk for about 1 to 1.5 hours one way. The terrain traverses wetlands and pampa rather than a relentless vertical climb, making it physically less grueling in terms of incline. However, because you are walking at over 4,500 meters (reaching up to 4,600m / 15,090 ft), the thin air makes even flat walking feel demanding.
Is this tour suitable for my first day in Cusco?
Absolutely not. The maximum altitude here is extremely high—higher than the highest point of the Classic Inca Trail. You should spend at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley acclimatizing before attempting this trek. Going straight to Singrenacocha upon arrival puts you at significant risk of altitude sickness, which would ruin the experience of the picnic and the views.
What is the "Lakeside Picnic" like?
Forget about a cold box lunch eaten on a rock. This tour features a proper picnic set up by the shores of the lagoon. You will enjoy artisan sandwiches, fresh fruits, juices, and traditional Andean sweets while surrounded by silence and snow-capped peaks. It’s a moment of tranquility designed to let you soak in the landscape, rather than just snapping a photo and rushing back down.
Will I see other tourists?
Very few, if any. Unlike Rainbow Mountain or Humantay, which see hundreds of visitors daily, Singrenacocha remains a hidden gem. It is quite common to be the only group at the lake, sharing the view only with grazing alpacas and vizcachas (Andean rabbits). If you are seeking the "remote wilderness" feeling without a multi-day camping commitment, this is the perfect choice.
How long is the drive?
It is a commitment. The drive from Cusco to the trailhead in Mallma takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours each way, heading south on the Interoceanic Highway towards the Ausangate region. To make the most of the daylight and morning weather (which is usually clearer), the tour departs early, typically around 4:30 AM. You will stop for a light breakfast in a local village like Tinke to break up the journey.
What should I wear?
You need to dress for four seasons in one day. The morning departure will be freezing, the hike under the high-altitude sun can feel surprisingly warm, and the wind coming off the glacier at the lake is icy. Layering is non-negotiable: thermal base layers, a fleece, a windproof/waterproof jacket, and a warm hat and gloves. Waterproof hiking shoes are also highly recommended as the trail can be boggy near the wetlands.
