Frequently Asked Questions Ausangate Full Circuit & Singrenacocha Lagoon: 6-Day Expedition
What makes this 6-day circuit different from the standard Ausangate treks?
The main difference is the inclusion of Singrenacocha Lagoon, a massive and strikingly turquoise lake located in a remote valley that standard 4 or 5-day loops skip. While most treks end in Pacchanta, this expedition extends the adventure to explore the northern face of the Vilcanota range, offering a more complete and isolated experience surrounded by the Callangate glaciers.
How difficult is this trek and what is the maximum altitude reached?
This is considered a Challenging / Hard trek. You will cross four high-altitude mountain passes, with the highest point being the Palomani Pass at 5,100 meters (16,732 ft). Since you will be hiking and sleeping consistently above 4,000 meters (13,000 ft), excellent acclimatization (minimum 3 days in Cusco) and good physical fitness are mandatory.
What are the accommodation and food arrangements like during the expedition?
This is a full-service camping trek. Terres des Incas provides high-quality 4-season tents (for sleeping and dining), sleeping mats, and a kitchen tent. You will be accompanied by a professional cook who prepares hot breakfasts, picnic or cooked lunches, and nutritious dinners to refuel. Mules and muleteers carry all camping gear and food; you only carry your daypack.
Are hot springs included in this itinerary?
Yes, the itinerary is strategically designed to include natural hot springs at two key points for recovery: Upis (Day 1): To relax your muscles at the start of the trek, right at the foot of Mount Ausangate. Pacchanta (Day 4): A rewarding soak after conquering the highest passes of the circuit, before heading towards Singrenacocha.
When is the best time of year to hike the Ausangate & Singrenacocha circuit?
The ideal time is during the dry season (May to October). During these months, days are generally sunny with clear views of the snow-capped peaks and the vibrant colors of the lagoons (Pucacocha, Ausangatecocha, Singrenacocha). However, nights are very cold, often dropping below freezing, so a high-quality sleeping bag is essential.
Does this trek include the classic Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?
While the route passes through the geologic region of "Red Valleys" (especially near Arapa and Pucacocha), this specific itinerary focuses on the full loop of the Apu Ausangate and the extension to Singrenacocha. It avoids the mass tourism crowds of the standard Vinicunca day-trip site to prioritize the solitude and pristine nature of the high Andean lakes and glaciers.
