Frequently Asked Questions Ausangate & Rainbow Mountain Challenge: 3-Day High Altitude Trek

How physically demanding is this trek, and do I need previous trekking experience?

This trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitude and long walking days (up to 7 hours). You don’t need technical climbing experience, but good physical condition and some hiking experience are strongly recommended. If you are comfortable walking several hours a day, you can absolutely enjoy this adventure.

How does the itinerary help with altitude acclimatization?

The route is designed to help your body gradually adapt to the altitude. You start trekking after reaching Tinki, and each day increases in elevation at a steady pace. Our guides closely monitor everyone, and we take breaks when needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

What is included in the tour, and what do I need to bring myself?

The tour includes private transportation, a professional bilingual guide (Spanish/English), meals during the trek, camping equipment, arrieros and horses for logistics, and all campsite arrangements. You’ll need to bring your personal trekking gear, sleeping bag, hiking boots, warm clothing, and personal items.

Will I see Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) before the crowds arrive?

Yes! One of the highlights of this trek is arriving at Vinicunca around 9:00 a.m., when there are far fewer tourists than on standard day tours. This allows you to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and explore the Red Valley in a much calmer and more authentic way.

What kind of accommodation and food can I expect during the trek?

You will sleep in comfortable mountain camps surrounded by incredible landscapes. All meals are freshly prepared by our trekking team and include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with options available for vegetarians and special diets if requested in advance.

Unlike one-day tours, this experience offers a deep immersion into the Andes, passing through remote valleys, alpine lakes, and high mountain passes near Ausangate. You’ll hike alongside alpacas, meet local arrieros, and experience the mountains in a more peaceful, authentic, and meaningful way.
