Frequently Asked Questions Ausangate Trek: The Classic Circuit & Hot Springs (5 Days)

What distinguishes the "Classic Circuit" from other Ausangate treks?

The Classic 5-Day Circuit is a true loop that encircles the entire Apu Ausangate massif. Unlike shorter versions that only visit the 7 Lagoons or Rainbow Mountain, this route takes you through the heart of the Vilcanota range. You will cross high mountain passes like Arapa and Palomani, camp next to glacial lakes like Ausangatecocha, and experience a complete immersion in high-Andean culture, far away from the crowds of Machu Picchu.

Are hot springs included in this 5-day itinerary?

Yes, this itinerary is famous for featuring hot springs at both the beginning and the end of the trek. Day 1 (Upis): You camp near the Upis Hot Springs, allowing you to relax in thermal waters while gazing directly at the glaciers of Ausangate. Day 4/5 (Pacchanta): The trek concludes in the village of Pacchanta, renowned for its well-maintained thermal baths, perfect for soothing your muscles after conquering the high passes.

How difficult is the Ausangate Circuit and what is the highest point?

This is a Challenging trek due to the sustained high altitude. You will spend the entire 5 days above 4,000 meters (13,100 ft). The most demanding section is the ascent to the Palomani Pass, which sits at approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 ft). It requires excellent acclimatization (we recommend at least 3 days in Cusco beforehand) and a good level of fitness.

Will I see the "7 Lagoons" of Ausangate on this trek?

Yes, the route naturally incorporates the famous 7 Lagoons (Siete Lagunas) area near Pacchanta on the final days of the trek. You will hike past stunning turquoise and green glacial lakes—such as Otorongococha and Alcacocha—seeing them from vantage points that day-trippers rarely reach. It’s a photographer’s paradise featuring reflections of the snow-capped peaks.

What is the camping experience like with Terres des Incas?

We provide a full-service camping experience designed for comfort in extreme conditions. This includes: High-quality 4-season sleeping tents. A dining tent with tables and chairs. A kitchen tent where our chef prepares fresh, hot meals (buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Mules and muleteers to carry all heavy equipment and your personal duffel bag (up to a set weight limit), so you only need to carry a daypack.

Is this trek suitable for solo travelers?

Absolutely. The Ausangate Circuit is one of the best options for solo travelers seeking solitude and connection with nature. We organize small group departures where you can meet like-minded hikers. Since the trail is much quieter than the Inca Trail, the camaraderie developed within the group is often stronger. Safety is our priority, and our professional guides ensure everyone manages the altitude well.
