Frequently Asked Questions Short Inca Trail 2 Days: The Fast Track to Machu Picchu

Is this just a "walking tour" or a real hike?

Make no mistake, this is a genuine Andean trek. While it is called "Short," the first day involves approximately 6 to 7 hours of hiking, covering about 12 km (7.5 miles). You start at KM 104 and immediately begin a steady ascent. The trail includes steep Inca steps, particularly the climb up to the Wiñay Wayna archaeological site. It is physically demanding enough to feel like a true accomplishment, but short enough to be completed by anyone with a reasonable fitness level who doesn't want to commit to four days of walking.

What is the major advantage of this route over taking the train directly?

The train drops you at the bottom of the valley in Aguas Calientes, where you look up at the mountains. This hike allows you to arrive at Machu Picchu from above, through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This is the only way—aside from the 4-day trek—to see the citadel revealed in its entirety as the Incas intended pilgrims to see it. You get that magical "reveal" moment in the late afternoon of Day 1, often when the site is glowing golden and the midday crowds have thinned out, offering a solitude you can't get on the standard bus tour.

Do we explore the citadel on the same day we hike in?

No, and this is a huge benefit. On Day 1, you hike to the Sun Gate, take your classic photos, and then descend past the ruins to catch a bus down to your hotel in Aguas Calientes for a hot shower and dinner. You don't tour the ruins while exhausted. You return fresh the next morning (Day 2) for a comprehensive 2-hour guided tour, giving you the energy to truly appreciate the history and engineering of the site.

What happens to my heavy luggage while I am hiking?

You travel light. Your main suitcase will stay safely stored at your hotel in Cusco. For the trip, you will pack a small overnight bag with fresh clothes and toiletries for the night in the hotel. You will drop this bag off at the train station before you start hiking, and the railway staff will transport it directly to Aguas Calientes for you. On the trail itself, you only carry a small daypack with water, sunscreen, a rain jacket, and your box lunch.

Why is the visit to Wiñay Wayna such a highlight?

Wiñay Wayna (meaning "Forever Young") is an archaeological gem that is arguably as beautiful as Machu Picchu but largely unknown to the average tourist because it is inaccessible by road or train. Only hikers see it. It features a stunning set of agricultural terraces carved into a steep mountainside with a backdrop of waterfalls and the Urubamba River far below. It is the perfect place to stop for lunch and soak in the silence of the cloud forest before the final push to the Sun Gate.

Do I still need to book this months in advance?

Yes, absolutely. Even though it is a shorter trek, it uses the exact same government permit system as the 4-day version. There are only 250 permits available per day for this specific route (KM 104). During peak season (May to September), these spots can sell out 3 to 4 months in advance. It is not a tour you can book last minute upon arrival in Cusco.
