Frequently Asked Questions Tour 7 Lakes of Ausangate: Full-Day Trek from Cusco

How does this trek compare to Rainbow Mountain in terms of difficulty and crowds?

This is the "connoisseur's choice" for high-altitude day hikes. While Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is famous for its colors, it is also famous for its crowds. The 7 Lakes trek is significantly quieter, offering a sense of isolation and peace that is hard to find elsewhere. Physically, it is a moderate challenge—you are hiking at high altitude (around 4,700m / 15,400ft), but the terrain is generally rolling rather than a steep, relentless ascent. It’s a loop, so the scenery is constantly changing, making the physical effort feel less repetitive than an out-and-back climb.

Why are there so many lakes, and do they really look different?

You are hiking at the foot of the massive Ausangate glacier, which feeds these lakes with meltwater. The mineral content and depth of each lake create distinct colors ranging from deep turquoise and emerald green to reddish hues. You will visit lakes like Pucacocha (Red Lake) and Patacocha, seeing them sparkle against the stark white backdrop of the snow-capped peak. It’s not just "more of the same"; it’s a geological gallery walk where the water changes personality at every turn.

Is the altitude dangerous on a day trip like this?

It is a serious factor. You will be hiking above 4,700 meters, which is higher than the Inca Trail's highest pass. Because you drive up from Cusco (3,400m) and start hiking immediately, altitude sickness is a real possibility if you are not acclimatized. We strongly recommend that you have spent at least two days in Cusco before attempting this. The "moderate" difficulty rating assumes you are already adapted to the thin air; if you are fresh off the plane, this hike will feel extremely difficult.

What is the "cultural immersion" aspect of this trek?

Unlike trails that are purely for tourists, this route passes through living communities where alpaca herding is still the primary way of life. You will start and end in Pacchanta, a traditional village that feels centuries removed from modern Cusco. Your breakfast and lunch are prepared by local families, giving you a direct taste of high-Andean hospitality. You aren't just observing the culture; you are supporting it directly by eating locally and interacting with the community.

Can I really swim in the hot springs after the hike?

Yes, and it is arguably the best way to end a hike in the entire Cusco region. In Pacchanta, there are natural thermal baths fed by the volcano's heat. After 4-5 hours of walking in the cold wind, slipping into a steaming hot pool while looking up at the very glacier you just hiked around is an experience of pure bliss. It’s an optional activity (small entry fee applies), but nearly everyone agrees it’s the highlight of the post-hike relaxation.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The weather at this altitude is unpredictable. You might start with sun and encounter hail or snow an hour later. This is part of the raw beauty of the high Andes. Our guides are trained to assess weather conditions constantly. If a storm rolls in, they know the quickest safe routes down. Because it is a loop trail, there are decision points where we can shorten the hike if necessary. We always recommend bringing a high-quality rain poncho and warm layers (gloves and hat are non-negotiable) because when the sun goes behind a cloud, the temperature drops instantly.
