Frequently Asked Questions Humantay Lake Full-Day Tour: Glaciers, Lagoons & Andean Culture

How steep is the hike really?

The hike is short but intense. You are only walking for about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the lake, but it is a consistent, steep uphill climb the entire way. You start at Soraypampa (3,900m / 12,800ft) and ascend to the lake at 4,200m (13,780ft). The combination of the incline and the thin air makes your heart rate jump quickly. It’s not a technical climb—you don’t need ropes—but it requires steady effort and frequent pauses to catch your breath.

Is this just a "stop and snap a photo" tour?

Not at all. Once you conquer the ascent, you have a generous block of free time—about 45 minutes to an hour—at the lake itself. This isn't a rushed visit where you take a selfie and leave. You have time to sit by the water, meditate, explore the shoreline, or even make a small offering to the Pachamama (Mother Earth) as local traditions encourage. The extended stay allows you to watch the colors of the water shift as the clouds move over the Humantay glacier above.

What if I can't make the hike up?

If you find the altitude or the steepness too challenging on the day of the tour, there is a backup plan. Local community members at the trailhead in Soraypampa rent out horses that can carry you up the majority of the trail. You will still need to walk the final, shorter segment to the lake's edge, but the horse saves your legs and lungs from the hardest part of the ascent. This service is an extra cash payment directly to the horse handlers, not included in the tour price.

Why does the tour start so early (4:30 AM)?

The early start is strategic for two reasons: weather and crowds. In the high Andes, the clearest skies are almost always in the morning; clouds tend to roll in and obscure the glacier peaks by early afternoon. Additionally, leaving Cusco before dawn ensures you arrive at the trailhead and start hiking before the midday sun gets too strong, and ideally, before the trail becomes saturated with other hikers. It maximizes your chances of seeing that perfect, mirror-like reflection on the water.

Do I need to pack a lunch?

No, we handle the nutrition. You will stop in the town of Mollepata for a proper breakfast before the hike to fuel up. After you descend from the lake, you will return to Mollepata for a well-deserved buffet lunch featuring traditional Andean dishes. You only need to carry a small daypack with water, snacks (like chocolate or nuts for energy), and your camera gear.

Can I do this tour on my first day in Cusco?

We strongly advise against it. The starting altitude of 3,900m is significantly higher than Cusco city (3,400m), and the lake sits at 4,200m. If you attempt this immediately upon arrival, you are at high risk for altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, dizziness), which will ruin the experience. We recommend spending at least two days exploring Cusco or the Sacred Valley to acclimatize before tackling this hike.
