The heart of the day revolves around Andean cuisine. You will actively assist the family in preparing a traditional homemade lunch over a wood-fired stove, selecting and preparing local ingredients. This communal effort culminates in a delightful shared meal, where you will enjoy authentic dishes like quinoa, potatoes, and local stews alongside your hosts. The afternoon offers insight into sustainable animal raising as you participate in feeding the guinea pigs. What exactly will we be eating?
You won't just be eating; you will be cooking. You assist in preparing a traditional "farm-to-table" lunch using ingredients you likely helped harvest or select. The meal is typically a hearty, rustic spread of quinoa soup, native potato varieties, corn, and local stews (often trout or vegetable-based, though guinea pig is a staple they raise). It is cooked over a traditional wood-fired stove, which gives the food a smoky, comforting flavor that you cannot replicate in a modern restaurant.
Is this suitable for children?
This is arguably the best tour for families with children. Kids tend to be bored by cathedral tours and history lectures, but they light up when asked to pick corn, feed animals, or play in the fields. Because of its location among the rolling hills and lakes of the Chinchero plateau, the drive there is scenic and peaceful. It’s close enough for a relaxed day trip but far enough to feel completely removed from the urban bustle of the city.
