Pickup from your hotel in Cusco and drive through the Sacred Valley. We'll make a short stop in the town of Ollantaytambo to stretch and take photos.
9:30 a.m. | Arrival in Patacancha – Welcome Ceremony & Tinka Blessing
Upon arrival, the local community will greet you with traditional clothing, Andean music, and a warm welcome. Then, you’ll take part in the Tinka Ceremony, an ancestral Andean ritual where families honor Pachamama (Mother Earth) and bless their alpacas with flowers, ribbons, and coca leaves, asking for fertility and protection.

How is a Pachamanca different from a regular lunch?
A Pachamanca is not cooked in an oven; the earth is the oven. The community digs a hole in the ground and lines it with volcanic stones that have been heated until they are white-hot. Ingredients like native potatoes, fava beans, corn, and seasoned meats (usually alpaca, chicken, or lamb) are layered onto the stones and then buried under grass and dirt. You will watch this process and then, about an hour later, help "unearth" the feast. The result is food with a unique, smoky, earthy flavor that you cannot replicate in a restaurant kitchen.
Where is Patacancha located relative to the main tourist sites?
Patacancha is located deep in the mountains, about a 45-minute to 1-hour drive uphill from the town of Ollantaytambo. At an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters (12,500 ft), it feels much more remote and untouched than villages closer to the main highway. The drive itself is spectacular, winding through a valley that has been inhabited and farmed since pre-Inca times. Because it is further afield, it receives far fewer visitors than places like Chinchero.
Is the weaving here different from other villages?
Yes, Patacancha is renowned for the quality and complexity of its textiles. While many markets sell synthetic or machine-assisted fabrics, the weavers in Patacancha are famous for using high-altitude, hand-spun alpaca wool and strictly natural dyes. Their designs often feature distinct red and black patterns that tell stories of the landscape and their history. You will see the entire process, from shearing to spinning to the loom work, which is done sitting on the ground in the traditional manner.
Do I need to be acclimatized for this tour?
Yes, you should be cautious. Even though there is no strenuous hiking involved, you will be spending the day at 3,800 meters, which is higher than Cusco and significantly higher than Machu Picchu. Walking around the village or helping with the harvest might leave you breathless. We recommend doing this tour after you have spent a few days in the Sacred Valley or Cusco to ensure you can enjoy the food and the experience without altitude sickness.
Can I combine this with a visit to Ollantaytambo?
Absolutely. Since the road to Patacancha starts in Ollantaytambo, you will pass right by the famous Inca fortress. Many travelers choose to do this cultural immersion in the morning and early afternoon, and then explore the Ollantaytambo ruins in the late afternoon when the crowds have thinned out, or catch a late train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village) afterward.
