Description: del Waqrapukara: The Horned Fortress of the Incas (Full Day)

Embark on an adventurous, full-day trek from Cusco to the magnificent and remote Waqra Pukara, the "Horned Fortress," located dramatically along a spectacular canyon. The journey begins with an early transfer south, followed by a hot Andean breakfast en route. The trek starts with a gradual ascent through high-Andean landscapes, where you will traverse grasslands and spot unique rock formations, rock paintings, and ancient Inca terrace remnants. This challenging but scenic hike leads you to one of the most powerful and isolated archaeological gems in southern Peru.

The strenuous effort culminates upon arrival at Waqra Pukara (3,700m to 4,300m approx. depending on the route), a fortress and ceremonial center built right into the cliffside. Your guide will explain the site's historical, spiritual, and astronomical significance as you explore its ceremonial terraces and Inca niches. You will then enjoy a picnic lunch with breathtaking views overlooking the sheer canyon before beginning the descent back to the starting point. The full-day adventure concludes with the return transfer, dropping you off in Cusco by early evening, having successfully discovered this impressive, mystical high-Andean sanctuary.

Frequently Asked Questions Waqrapukara: The Horned Fortress of the Incas (Full Day)

Why is it called the "Horned Fortress"?

The name comes from the two massive, horn-like rock formations that rise above the site. Waqra means "horn" and Pukara means "fortress" in Quechua. Unlike the polished royal estates of the Sacred Valley, this site looks like a fortress fused directly into the jagged mountain peaks. It was originally built by the pre-Inca Qanchi culture and later conquered and expanded by the Incas, making it a unique hybrid of military stronghold and ceremonial center.

Is the hike harder than Rainbow Mountain?

It is generally considered less breathless but longer. Rainbow Mountain is a short, intense struggle against extreme altitude (5,000m+). Waqrapukara is a true hike. You typically start near the village of Santa Lucía or Sangarará. The trail undulates for about 2–3 hours (one way) through Ichu grass and wetlands. While the max altitude is lower than Rainbow Mountain (approx. 4,140m–4,300m), it is still a high-altitude trek that requires stamina for the return journey, which often involves some uphill sections you might not expect.

How long is the drive?

You must be prepared for a long day of travel. The drive from Cusco to the trailhead takes about 3.5 to 4 hours each way. This means you will likely spend as much time in the van (7-8 hours total) as you do hiking and exploring. Departures are very early (typically 4:00 AM – 4:30 AM) to ensure you have enough daylight to enjoy the site before the afternoon winds pick up.

What is the lunch situation?

Because the site is remote with no restaurants nearby, this tour typically includes a box lunch or picnic. You will likely eat near the ruins or at a scenic lookout point, surrounded by the silence of the canyon. The meal is designed to be portable but filling—think hearty sandwiches, fruit, chocolate, and juice—giving you the fuel to hike back without the heaviness of a buffet meal.

Will I see other tourists?

Very few. Waqrapukara is still considered an "off-the-beaten-path" gem. While Rainbow Mountain sees thousands of visitors daily, Waqrapukara sees a handful. You will likely have the terraces, ancient triple-jamb doorways, and the cliff-edge views almost entirely to yourself. It offers the kind of solitude that is now rare at Machu Picchu.

Is it safe for someone afraid of heights?

The site itself is perched on a ridge with steep drop-offs into the Apurímac Canyon. While the main paths are safe and wide enough to walk comfortably, exploring the edges or climbing to the very top of the "horns" can be vertigo-inducing. If you have a severe fear of heights, you can still enjoy the magnificent views from the lower plazas without venturing near the sheer cliffs.
