Day 1: Arequipa – Salinas Reserve – Chivay
7:00 am – Pick up at your hotel (Arequipa)
We’ll begin the day with pickup from your hotel in Arequipa. Our professional guide will give you a brief introduction to the tour and the points of interest we’ll visit along the way.
Pampa Cañahuas – Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve
Our first stop will be the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, the natural habitat of vicuñas, one of the most emblematic species of Andean fauna. Here you can observe these elegant camelids in their natural environment, learn about their cultural and ecological importance, and enjoy the views of the Arequipa plateau.
Patapampa (4,910 meters above sea level) – Volcano Viewpoint
We continue to Patapampa, the highest point of the hike, where the Volcano Viewpoint is located. From here, you’ll have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Misti, Chachani, Ampato, Sabancaya, and Hualca Hualca volcanoes. You can also sip coca tea to help with altitude acclimatization.
1:00 pm – Arrival in Chivay and typical lunch
We arrive in Chivay, capital of Caylloma province and gateway to the Colca Canyon. Here we will enjoy a typical lunch at a local restaurant, where you can sample regional dishes.
3:30 pm – La Calera Hot Springs (optional)
In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to visit the La Calera hot springs, located just minutes from Chivay. These natural springs, with temperatures reaching up to 38°C, are ideal for relaxing after your trip and enjoying the natural surroundings.
6:30 pm – Free dinner or with folklore show (optional)
The evening is free for you to explore Chivay at your own pace. If you wish, you can opt for a dinner with a folklore show, where you’ll enjoy traditional music and dance from the region.

Day 2: Chivay – Cruz del Cóndor – Arequipa
6:00 am – Breakfast at the hotel
We begin the day with a buffet breakfast at the hotel, featuring local and international options to recharge our batteries before the excursion to the Condor Lookout.
6:30 am – Departure to the Cruz del Cóndor
We set off for one of the most anticipated moments of the tour: the Cruz del Cóndor, the most famous natural viewpoint in the Colca Canyon and one of the best places in the world to observe the flight of the Andean condor, a sacred bird for the Andean people.
Condor watching and free time
We will have enough time to:
Watch the majestic flight of the condor from the depths of the canyon
Take spectacular photographs of the canyon and its pre-Inca terraces
Take a light walk through the nearby ravine
Learn about the spiritual importance of the condor in the Andean worldview
Visit to Maca and Yanque – Traditional Villages
On the way back, we will visit the towns of Maca and Yanque, known for their:

While a 1-day tour is possible, it requires departing Arequipa around 3:00 AM and spending over 10 hours in a vehicle in a single day. The 2-day tour offers a much more relaxed and immersive pace. It allows you to comfortably acclimatize to the altitude, enjoy a soak in the natural hot springs of Chivay, witness a traditional folklore show at dinner, and arrive at the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint well-rested the next morning for the best wildlife viewing.
What altitude does this tour reach, and how can I avoid altitude sickness?
This tour travels through high-altitude Andean landscapes. You will start in Arequipa (2,335m), cross the highest point at the Patapampa Volcano Viewpoint (4,910m / 16,108 ft), and sleep in the town of Chivay (3,635m / 11,925 ft). To prevent altitude sickness (soroche), we recommend spending a day or two in Arequipa before the tour, staying hydrated, eating light meals, and drinking traditional mate de coca (coca tea), which we provide during the trip.
Are we guaranteed to see Condors at the Cruz del Cóndor?
While the Andean Condor is a wild bird and sightings can never be 100% guaranteed, the Cruz del Cóndor is considered one of the best places in the world to observe them. The thermal updrafts created by the deep canyon in the early morning make it an ideal flight path. Our tour is specifically timed to arrive at the viewpoint when the condors are most active, giving you an excellent chance to witness these majestic birds soaring right above you.
What kind of wildlife will we see besides the Condors?
The journey to the Colca Canyon is just as spectacular as the destination! On Day 1, as we drive through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, you will have incredible opportunities to see herds of wild Vicuñas (the elegant, wild relative of the alpaca). You may also spot domesticated alpacas and llamas grazing on the Andean plateau, viscachas (Andean rabbits) near the rocks, and various species of high-altitude birds.
What are the La Calera Hot Springs like?
After a day of traveling through the Andes, visiting the La Calera Hot Springs is the perfect way to unwind. Located just outside of Chivay, these natural thermal pools are heated by volcanic activity, with water temperatures reaching a soothing 38°C (100°F). The mineral-rich waters are known for their relaxing properties. (Please note: Entrance to the hot springs is optional and not included in the base tour price).
What should I pack for an overnight trip to the Colca Canyon?
The climate in the Colca Valley varies dramatically. Days are often sunny and temperate (15-20°C / 59-68°F), while nights drop to near freezing (0-5°C / 32-41°F). You must pack in layers! Essentials: A warm jacket, fleece, comfortable walking shoes, and a daypack. Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and strong sunscreen (the sun is intense at high altitudes). Extras: A swimsuit and towel for the hot springs, extra cash (Soles) for tips, optional entrances, and beautiful local crafts in the villages of Maca and Yanque.
