Recommendations Colca Canyon 3-Day Trek: The Ultimate Deep Canyon Experience
Physical fitness: It’s important to be in good physical condition, as you’ll be hiking for 3 to 5 hours daily on uneven trails and steep slopes. The final climb from Sangalle to Cabanaconde (day 3) is demanding.
Altitude: This tour takes place between 2,100 and 3,600 meters above sea level. We recommend acclimatizing in Arequipa (at least one day) before beginning the trek.
Clothing and equipment:
Light and breathable clothing for the day (ideal in layers).
Warm jacket and thermal clothing for the night (it gets cold in the canyon).
Trekking shoes or sneakers with good traction.
Hat or cap, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Swimsuit and small towel if you wish to use the oasis pool.
Backpack: Carry only the essentials in a small backpack (5 to 7 kg). The rest of your luggage can be stored at your hotel in Arequipa or Chivay. If you’d like to rent a mule to carry your backpack, we can arrange this in advance.
Hydration and snacks: Bring a reusable water bottle and some energy snacks (nuts, bars, chocolates). Drinks are available in rustic accommodations, but sometimes in limited quantities.
Electricity and connectivity: There’s no phone service during the trek, and access to electricity is very limited. Charge your devices before you set off and bring a power bank if you need it.
Personal first aid kit: Although the guide carries a basic first aid kit, we suggest you bring your own medications (altitude sickness, anti-inflammatories, bandages, etc.) if you use them regularly.
Respect and local culture: In the Andean communities we visit, hospitality is simple and genuine. We appreciate your open attitude, your respect for local times and customs, and your ever-present smile.

Frequently Asked Questions Colca Canyon 3-Day Trek: The Ultimate Deep Canyon Experience
How difficult is the Colca Canyon 3-Day Trek?
This trek is classified as Moderate to Challenging. You will be hiking for 3 to 5 hours daily on uneven, steep terrain. The most demanding part is the final morning (Day 3), which involves a steep, continuous ascent from the canyon floor at the Sangalle Oasis (2,100m) back up to Cabanaconde (3,287m). You must be in good physical condition. However, spreading the trek over three days (compared to the rushed 2-day option) makes the daily pacing much more manageable and enjoyable.
Can I rent a mule if I get too tired or need help with my bags?
Yes! If you feel the ascent on the final day is too strenuous, or if you prefer not to carry your backpack throughout the trek, you can hire a pack mule. Mules are available for an optional additional cost (approximately US$ 45 per day) and can be arranged in advance or directly with your guide before the steep climb out of the canyon.
What is the accommodation like at the bottom of the canyon?
The accommodation on this trek is designed for an authentic, immersive experience. Night 1 (San Juan de Chuccho): You will stay in a rustic family hostel, sharing meals and conversation with local canyon residents. Night 2 (Sangalle Oasis): You will sleep in an eco-lodge featuring basic, rustic bungalows surrounded by palm trees. Please note that these accommodations are simple. Electricity is very limited (bring a power bank!), and there is no cell phone or internet service—making it the perfect place to truly disconnect.
What do I do with my main luggage during the trek?
Since you will only need a small daypack (5 to 7 kg) containing your essentials for the 3 days, you do not need to carry all your luggage into the canyon. You can securely store your main luggage at your hotel in Arequipa or with our transportation in Chivay. We highly recommend packing light to make the steep descents and ascents easier.
Will I get altitude sickness in the Colca Canyon?
While the canyon floor is relatively low (2,100m), the starting point in Cabanaconde is at 3,287m (10,784 ft), and the drive from Arequipa crosses a high pass at 4,910m (16,108 ft). Because of this, altitude sickness is a possibility. We strongly recommend spending at least one or two days in Arequipa (2,335m) to acclimatize before starting the trek, staying hydrated, and bringing any personal medication you might need.
Do I need to bring my own food and water?
All major meals are fully included (3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 2 dinners) and will be prepared by local families or at the eco-lodge. However, we highly recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and your own energy snacks (nuts, chocolate, cereal bars) for the trail. You can purchase bottled water and snacks at small rustic shops along the route, but prices are higher at the bottom of the canyon due to the difficulty of transporting goods.
