Frequently Asked Questions Lake Titicaca Full Day: Uros Floating Islands & Taquile

How many islands do we visit during the Lake Titicaca Full Day tour?

This comprehensive full-day tour takes you to two of the lake’s most famous destinations: the Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island. You will start with the unique reed platforms of the Uros people to learn about their ancient construction methods, and then continue further into the lake to explore the ancestral traditions and world-class textiles of Taquile.

What are the Uros Floating Islands actually made of?

The Uros islands are a marvel of ancestral engineering! They are hand-constructed using totora reeds that grow in the shallows of Lake Titicaca. The islands are made of a base of thick totora roots (khili) and topped with layers of fresh reeds. Because the bottom layers rot over time, the Uros people must add fresh reeds to the surface every few weeks to maintain their homes and keep them afloat.

What is unique about the culture on Taquile Island?

Taquile is world-renowned for its UNESCO-protected textile art. A unique cultural aspect of Taquile is that the men are the master knitters! While women spin the wool and weave on looms, the men create the iconic, finely-knit "chullos" (hats). The colors and patterns of these hats aren't just for decoration; they signify a man's marital status and his role within the community.

Is lunch included in the full-day tour?

Yes, a traditional community lunch is included! After exploring Taquile, you will be welcomed into a local restaurant for a meal that usually features fresh lake trout (or an omelet for vegetarians), served with local potatoes, quinoa soup, and traditional Andean herbal tea. This meal offers one of the best views of the lake, looking out toward the snow-capped Andes in the distance.

How long is the boat ride, and is it comfortable?

The journey from the Port of Puno to Uros takes about 25 minutes. From Uros to Taquile, the boat ride is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. We use fully equipped tourist motorboats with comfortable seating, a sun deck for photography, and an on-board bathroom. The boat ride is a great time to relax and enjoy the vast, deep-blue landscape of the world’s highest navigable lake.

What should I bring for a full day on Lake Titicaca?

The weather on the lake can change quickly, so we recommend packing: Sun Protection: The sun at 3,812 meters is extremely intense. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and UV-protection sunglasses. Warm Layers: It can be very cold and windy on the boat, even if it’s sunny. A light jacket or windbreaker is essential. Cash (Soles): You’ll want small change for the optional "totora reed boat" ride in Uros or to buy authentic textiles directly from the artisans in Taquile. Water & Snacks: While lunch is included, having a reusable water bottle and small snacks for the boat ride is recommended.
