Frequently Asked Questions Lake Titicaca Off-the-Beaten-Path: Uros & Llachon Homestay
What makes the "Off-the-Beaten-Path" tour different from classic Titicaca tours?
Unlike the standard tours that visit the crowded floating islands near Puno, this tour takes you to Uros Titino. These are remote floating islands located further out in the lake, near the Capachica Peninsula. Because they are harder to reach, they receive very few visitors, offering a much more authentic and peaceful interaction with the Uros people in their natural environment.
Why stay in Llachón instead of Amantani or Taquile?
Llachón is a hidden gem on the Capachica Peninsula. While Amantani is the traditional choice for homestays, it can sometimes feel busy with groups. Llachón offers a "forgotten corner" feel with stunning sandy beaches, ancient agricultural terraces, and spectacular viewpoints of the lake that look across to the Cordillera Real in Bolivia—all without the large tourist crowds.
What kind of activities can I do in Llachón?
Llachón is perfect for active and curious travelers. You can hike to the Cerro Carus or Pachatata viewpoints for sunset, participate in traditional weaving and spinning demonstrations with your host family, or even go kayaking or sailing in traditional wooden boats. It is a place where you are encouraged to live the daily rhythm of the Quechua community.
What is the accommodation like in a Llachón homestay?
Accommodation in Llachón is "rural-comfortable." You will stay in a local family home in a private room built with traditional adobe and wood. The rooms are simple but cozy, often featuring hand-woven blankets and incredible views of the lake. While bathrooms are usually shared, many homes in Llachón have been improved specifically to welcome guests with cleanliness and Andean hospitality.
Is this tour physically demanding?
This tour is rated as easy to moderate. Most of the transport is by boat, but once in Llachón, there are opportunities for hiking. The climb to the local viewpoints involves walking on uneven paths at high altitude (3,820 meters). We recommend taking these walks slowly and ensuring you have spent at least 24 hours in Puno or Cusco to acclimatize before arrival.
What should I pack for a remote Titicaca homestay?
Since you are visiting a more secluded area, come prepared with: A Daypack: Leave your main luggage in Puno and bring only what you need for 2 days. Flashlight/Headlamp: Rural villages have limited street lighting at night. Portable Power Bank: While many homes have electricity, outlets for charging multiple devices can be limited. Warm Clothing: Once the sun sets, the temperature in Llachón drops rapidly. A heavy jacket, hat, and gloves are essential. Small Gifts: If you wish to thank your host family, small useful items like fruit, high-quality cooking oil, or school supplies for children are greatly appreciated.
