Frequently Asked Questions The Majestic South 14 days: Arequipa, Colca and The Rainbow Mountain
What makes this the "Majestic" itinerary?
This tour is defined by its completeness. It doesn't force you to choose between nature and culture. You get the colonial history of Arequipa, the wildlife of the Colca Canyon, the living culture of Lake Titicaca, the archaeology of Machu Picchu, and the geological wonder of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). It is the complete package for the ambitious traveler.
How does the route manage the high altitude?
It uses the "staircase method," which is the safest way to travel in the Andes. You fly from sea level to Arequipa (2,300m), which is high enough to start adapting but low enough to sleep comfortably. You then gradually ascend to the Colca Canyon (3,600m) and Puno (3,800m) before finishing in Cusco. By the time you attempt the high-altitude trek to Rainbow Mountain at the end of the trip, your body is fully acclimatized.
What is special about the visit to Arequipa (Days 2–3)?
Arequipa is known as the "White City" because its historic center is built from sillar, a white volcanic stone. The highlight here is the Santa Catalina Monastery. It is essentially a city within a city—a maze of colorful streets, cloisters, and plazas that was closed to the public for centuries. It offers some of the most beautiful photographic lighting in Peru.
What happens in the Colca Canyon (Days 4–5)?
You venture into one of the world's deepest canyons. The main event is the "Cruz del Condor", where you can watch Andean Condors gliding on thermal currents just a few meters above your head. But the journey itself is also spectacular, passing through the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, where you will see herds of vicuñas and alpacas in the wild.
How do we experience Lake Titicaca (Days 6–7)?
After traveling to Puno, you spend a full day on the water. You will visit the Uros Floating Islands to learn about the reed-building technology of the Uru people. Then, you continue to Taquile Island. Taquile is famous for its male weavers and its distinct social structure. The walk to the top of the island offers a panoramic view that looks more like the Mediterranean than a lake in the Andes.
What is the "Route of the Sun" (Day 8)?
This is the transfer from Puno to Cusco. Instead of a boring flight, you take a guided tourist bus. It’s a road trip through the heart of the Altiplano. You stop at the Pukara Museum, the high pass of La Raya (where you can see snow-capped peaks), the massive Inca temple of Raqchi, and the colonial church of Andahuaylillas. It turns a travel day into a highlight.
When do we see the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?
This physical challenge is saved for the end of the trip (usually Day 12 or 13). Why? Because the mountain sits at 5,036 meters (16,522 ft). Having spent nearly two weeks at altitude, your body will be ready to tackle the hike. The reward is seeing the surreal stripes of turquoise, lavender, and gold created by mineral sediments, with the Ausangate glacier looming in the background.
Who is the ideal traveler for this 14-day tour?
This is for the traveler who wants maximum variety. If you want to see the desert, the canyons, the lakes, the ruins, and the colored mountains all in one trip—and you have two weeks to do it right—this is the perfect itinerary. It balances active days (hiking) with cultural days (city tours and markets).
